What is the S.A.F.E. Project?
S.A.F.E. or Supporting Action for Eastwood as it is widely known is a student-led project right at the heart of Eastwood. It is the brainchild of a group of Year 10 and 11 students from Eastwood Comprehensive School. Their vision was and remains simple, to make a difference to the community in which they live and grow up wit
hin.
With the help of their Head Teacher Mr Pickford and funding consultancy firm Fundsport Ltd, the group of students were able to secure a double fronted centre in the heart of Eastwood town Centre. This has now become a hub of activity for the local community. Currently Castle College operate some of their learning courses from the centre, while Extended Services and Community Services from the School deliver a wide variety of activities and programs within it.
The principle idea was to give the Family of Schools a base within the community. A Centre where all six of our schools were represented, whether parents wished to pop in and find out what adult learning courses are available, to purchase concert tickets for school productions or to just find out what is happening within the community - S.A.F.E. offers that service.
The centre boasts three functional rooms, one with a fully equipped 10 station IT suite with internet, a project room with comfortable seating and the main reception area. There is also a toilet with disabled access and a basic kitchen with tea and coffee making facilities.
Over the last few months since it became operational, S.A.F.E. has delivered a variety of activities for the community
free of charge. These include Community Internet Cafe, Gallery 37 Workshops, Wii Fit Holiday Club, Regular community coffee mornings and much much more. It also formed part of the main venue for the Eastwood Christmas Lights Switch On Event back in November 2010.
The group were also nominated for their innovative work in the Young People of The Year Awards 2010. The glitzy ceremony held at Nottingham University late in the year saw the group claim the runner-up prize.
The project is now managed day-to-day by the students with the support of Sarah Taylor (Community Development Manager at Eastwood Comprehensive School), Barry Cooper (Extended Services Cluster Manager) and Mr M Pickford (Head Teacher at Eastwood Comprehensive School).
